FLAG ETIQUETTE
RESPECT FOR THE FLAG:

The
flag should always be carried upright, aloft and free.
|

The
flag should be displayed high above and free of anything beneath
it, such as the ground, the floor, water or merchandise.
|
 |
The
flag should always be allowed to fall freely. Use bunting
- not the U.S. flag - to drape, festoon, draw back or hand in
folds as decoration. Bunting of blue, white and red -
always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle and
the red below - should be used for covering a speaker's desk,
draping the front of a platform and so on.

The
flag should be treated with respect. Protect it from being
easily torn. soiled or damaged in any way when fastening,
displaying, using or storing it.

All
parts of the flag should be kept completely free of markings,
insignias, letters, words, figures, designs, pictures or
drawings of any nature not inherent in its creation.

The
flag should not be used as an informal covering for a ceiling.
|
|
It
is customary to display the flag from sunrise to sunset.
However the flag may be displayed 24 hours if properly
illuminated during hours of darkness. |

When
displayed either horizontally or vertically on a wall or in a
window the blue field should be uppermost and to the flags own
right, that is, to the observer's left.

When
other flags are flown on the same halyard (rope), the national
flag must be at the highest peak.
|

When
flags are flown on adjacent staffs, the national flag should
be hoisted first and lowered last. No other flag should be
flown above or to the right of the national flag except as
shown in item 5.

The
national flag, when displayed on crossed staffs, should be on
the flags right and its staff should be in front of the staff
of the other flag.
|

The
national flag should be at the center and highest peak when
displayed with a group of flags.
|

6. |
When
flags of other nations are displayed together, they must be
displayed on separate staffs and at equal heights. The United
States flag must be displayed on its right.

7. |
The
flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the
peak for an instant and then lowered to half-staff position.
When lowering the flag, it should be first raised to the peak
position and then lowered completely. On Memorial day, the
flag should be displayed at half-staff till noon only, then
raised to the peak. By order of the President, the flag should
be displayed at half staff in accordance with the directive.
The Governor of any State, territory or possession may order
the flags to half-mast in the event of a death of a present or
former official. |
