| There are only a few Midwestern men that don't dream of having a large
shop to tinker around it and I'm no different. My shop / garage originally
was planned to be 20 ft. X 24 ft. two-story, but the building department
would not allow me to have it. No two story garages in this neighborhood
they said. So, I just made it twice a big on the ground, 30 ft. wide, 40
ft. deep. Hey, my neighbor has just had a metal pole barn built that was
40 ft X 40 ft, with 12 ft high walls. The Amish workers did a fantastic
well crafted job, but something that size, in the city limits? In a
subdivision? And then they said I couldn't build a two story garage that
matches my house. Of course, these are the same city administrators that
also decided I should pay $86.00 a year property tax for my metal 8 ft X 10 ft. yard
shed. Hell, we bought the thing, never out of the box, at a yard sale for
$50.00! Oh well, here is a history of this project, some photos, and some afterthoughts. If you want to take on a project like this you will find some good information that may keep you from making some of the same mistakes I did. |
